Green Party commissions independent consultation on Tesco plans
18 December 2008
Broxtowe Green Party has instructed planning consultants to prepare a response to plans for the extended Tesco superstore.
As part of the ‘Say No To Tesco Campaign’ Broxtowe Green Party has instructed Ian Baseley Associates to fully analyse Tesco’s application for a larger store of 9185 square metres in Beeston town centre.
David Mitchell, campaigns co-ordinator says: “As a party we felt that the scale of the new store was excessive for Beeston. At over 9000 square meters this store will be 3.3 times as large as Sainsbury on Stoney Street. We have sought a professional opinion so as to be certain our arguments for objecting to this proposal are sound.”
Nick Baseley, chartered planning consultant with Ian Baseley Associates states: “I share the significant concerns of many local residents and businesses that Tesco’s proposed increase in floorspace is simply too much. This could result in the closure of several of the town’s smaller retailers as well as potentially undermining the council’s exciting vision for the redevelopment of Beeston Square.
“The site is deserving of a far better design solution than that proposed given the prominence of this important corner site.”
Paul Anderson, chair of Broxtowe Green Party says: “This report backs up our campaign and underlines the concerns of many of Beeston’s residents. We have had tremendous support so far and will be holding another campaign stall this Saturday morning 13th December in Ten Bell Square. People still have until 8th January to object to the council online, by letter or email.”
Last week Tesco submitted amended plans for the superstore which consisted of minor design changes and a response to Nottinghamshire County Council’s Highway Authority. The county council had concluded that the Station Road/Middle Street junction will “operate over capacity” if the extended store is built. Broxtowe Borough Council’s Planning Department is currently assessing whether Tesco’s response to this very fundamental issue is sufficiently robust.
